Eagle Scout Tostenson carried out a community project by assembling and installing a 9-basket Disc Golf Course for New Hanover Presbyterian Church. The work included placing the baskets and tee boxes on the wooden area of the church property and provided Church members, especially the youth, and the community with a safe and fun fellowship activity. Eagle Scout Richardson of Troop 555 was recognized by Mr. McGhee and the Board of Supervisors. Eagle Scout Richardson carried out a community project by building 25 Wood Duck boxes; six 6 were installed in Henricus Park in Chesterfield County and the rest on the Staunton River in Halifax County and the Scuppernong River in Washington County, North Carolina. Eagle Scout Tucker of Troop 544 was recognized by Mr. Setliff and the Board of Supervisors. Eagle Scout Tucker carried out a community project by raising funds from a concession at the Parsons’ Cause Reenactments and then planned and cleared the pathways at the Hanover Humane Society’s facilities, trimming the overgrowth, hauling away debris, lining the cleared walkways with logs, and building and installing two benches at different locations on the trail. | Robert W. Herzog, March 10, 2010 |
Robert W. Herzog, former principal at Beaverdam High and Elementary Schools, was recognized by Mr. Stanley and the Board of Supervisors. Mr. Herzog first came to Hanover County as a student at Randolph-Macon College and after graduation was appointed principal of Beaverdam High and Elementary Schools, where he served from September 1950 until June 1954. During his tenure Mr. Herzog worked to improve the high school curriculum by offering science, math and foreign language courses not previously available; encouraged all students to participate in sports making certain uniforms were available; and created an atmosphere of respect among students and faculty. Following his tenure at Beaverdam Schools, Mr. Herzog served as Assistant Headmaster at Norfolk Academy from 1954-1959 and was recruited by Hampton Roads Academy for the position of Headmaster where he served until 1961. He joined St. Christopher’s School as Assistant Headmaster in 1962 and remained there until his retirement in 1990. “The Robert Williams Herzog Award” is presented each year to the St. Christopher’s School student who is not only a top athlete but also a top scholar. |

Longtime Patrick Henry head football coach Ray Long was recognized by Mr. Stanley and the Board of Supervisors upon his retirement. During his 28 seasons at Patrick Henry, Long finished with 228 wins, most for any football coach in Central Region history. In 1994 his Patriots capped an undefeated season by winning the Virginia High School League Division 5 State Championship, defeating Deep Creek 21-7. Coach Long’s teams also twice finished as state runners-up, in 1996 and 2001. During his tenure the Patriots won six regional titles and at one point between 1993 and 2000 won 44 consecutive Colonial District games. Coach Long was named Colonial District Coach of the Year on 10 occasions and Central Region Coach of the Year six times. |

Frank D. Hargrove Sr., Hanover County’s longtime representative in the Virginia House of Delegates, chose not to seek re-election this year after 28 years of service. He was recognized by Mr. Gordon, Mr. Stanley and the Board of Supervisors, who thanked him for his leadership. Del. Hargrove worked tirelessly to help maintain a positive economic environment and maintain Virginia’s preeminent status as a great place to live, raise a family, or start a business and also was a leading voice in the Virginia House of Delegates on behalf of the mentally and physically disabled. Del. Hargrove thanked the Board for the recognition and related the story of his service on a committee that redistricted the County in the 1960’s. During that process, not only were the current County magisterial districts formed but they also were named “…around my kitchen table,” he said with a laugh. |

Martha Wingfield was recognized by Mr. Stanley and the Board of Supervisors for her leadership on the Hanover Historical Commission. During 10 years of service on the Historical Commission, Martha Wingfield worked to preserve the historical resources of Hanover County and set an example for other citizens through her active participation and dedication. She served as the Commission’s Vice Chairman from March 2007 to February 2008. |

Mr. Gordon and the Board of Supervisors recognized the Department of Emergency Communications for winning the Industry Leader award from the National Safety Council. The Hanover County Department of Emergency Communications recently became one of only three local government agencies in the nation to be recognized as a 2009 “Industry Leader” by the National Safety Council. The Department’s employees worked 99,159 hours without any time lost to injuries in 2008. Mr. Stanley and the Board of Supervisors recognized Deanna (Kelly) Jerry, recognizing her contributions to the Beaverdam District. Mrs. Jerry enjoys and serves as the matriarch over five generations. Mrs. Jerry has been a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Doswell, where she still sings with the Senior Choir, and is a former member of Missionary Circle and Usher Board. She is noted for her community service and outreach especially fundraising on behalf of the Hanover County NAACP and the collection of clothing for the Hanover Children’s Home. Mrs. Jerry’s daughter, Edith J. Patterson of the Charles County (Md.) Commissioners, also presented a history of Charles County to Mr. Stanley and other members of the Board of Supervisors. |

| Aubrey Hopson, September 9, 2009 |
Aubrey Hopson, formerly of the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, was recognized by Mr. Gordon and the Board of Supervisors. Aubrey Hopson served the citizens of Hanover County in the Sheriff’s Office for 32 years before his retirement earlier this month. After being hired on July 1, 1977 as a patrol deputy, he worked his way through the ranks in the Uniform Patrol and Investigative Divisions. In his most recent assignment as Major, Hopson was directly responsible as Officer-in-Charge of the Investigative Division and supervised those who are responsible for a high clearance rate (62.4% last year). The Board’s resolution noted that Aubrey Hopson served the citizens and the Sheriff’s Office by providing leadership through guidance, religious philosophy, and by setting an example to all persons and employees he encountered during this service. He graduated from the Professional Executive Leadership School, received the Secret Service Dignitary Protection Certificate, and in 2007 received the Congressional Veteran Commendation for his 27 years of service in the U.S. Army. Aubrey Hopson proudly served in the U.S. Army on active duty for 6 years including service in Vietnam, and 21 years in the Virginia Army Reserve National Guard. As a member of the 183rd Personnel Services Company he was deployed under Operation Desert Calm, later known as Desert Storm. The Board recognized Terry Gay’s dedicated service to the County and offered its best wishes for a long, healthy, and happy retirement. |

John Dyer of Ashland, who is a volunteer assistant coach for runners at Patrick Henry High School, was recognized by Mr. Via and the Board of Supervisors for his outstanding performance in the World Masters Track and Field Championships held in Lahti, Finland, July 28- August 9, 2009. Mr. Dyer finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles for men 50-54 years of age. He was one of only three Americans to make the finals and was the fastest of all American runners competing in the event. |

Sumpter Priddy was recognized by Mr. Via and the Board of Supervisors for his work in getting published Hanover County’s first comprehensive history, “Nature’s Bounty, Nation’s Glory: The Heritage and History of Hanover County, Virginia.” Mr. is a native and resident of Hanover who had a dream of preserving the rich heritage and history of the County for future generations. In 2004 he organized the formation of the Heritage and History of Hanover County, Inc., a non-profit 501 (c) (3) educational corporation, an organization devoted to the development and publication of a history book on Hanover County. The book was unveiled on August 30 and is now on sale. This first comprehensive history of Hanover County chronicles the lives of Hanover residents from 1720-1950. The Board’s resolution stated that “Mr. Priddy’s hard work sets an example for the citizens of Hanover through his active participation and further demonstrated his dedication to the County of Hanover.” The Board expressed their grateful appreciation to him and presented to him a painting of the historic Hanover Courthouse and old stone jail. |

Girl Scout Ashby earned the Gold Award by coordinating a community project by “Operation Dominican Republic.” This effort collected, packaged and delivered for shipment donated school supplies for the children of Makarios in the Dominion Republic. Cool Spring Baptist Church and the leadership of Boy Scout Troop 521 were recognized by Mr. Setliff and the Board of Supervisors for 75 years of service. Troop 555 has brought Scouting’s program of character development, citizenship training and personal fitness to hundreds of boys in the Richmond, Mechanicsville and Atlee communities. Seventy-five (75) scouts from Troop 521 have attained the rank of Eagle Scout over these 75 years. The Eagle Scout projects and other community service projects totaling hundreds of hours of volunteer service by the youth and adult members of Troop 521 have greatly benefited the County of Hanover and its citizens and has greatly enhanced the quality of life in the Mechanicsville area and Hanover County. |

Anne Melton, who is retiring from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, was recognized by Mr. Via and the Board of Supervisors. Anne Melton was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to represent the Henry Magisterial District on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission from 1994 through 1999 and then reappointed to represent the Mechanicsville Magisterial District from 2000 to 2009. Anne Melton has been one of the longest serving members of the Parks and Recreation Commission and provided a significant service to the County through her continuous support of special events and programs. The Board expressed its heartfelt appreciation for her 15 years of loyal service. |

To achieve this high honor Eagle Scout Cavanaugh carried out a community project of wildlife habitat enhancement at the 301 Landfill for the Hanover County Department of Public Works by constructing and installing wood duck houses around the water basins and planting a wetland transition area with a combination of seeds designed for deer and turkeys. Beryl Holzbach, Ms. Wheelchair USA, was recognized by Mr. Wade and the Board of Supervisors. The Ms. Wheelchair USA Program was established to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of women with disabilities. Beryl Holzbach represented Virginia in the national Ms. Wheelchair USA competition in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, in August 2008, and presented her platform on health awareness for women with disabilities. The Board recognized Beryl Holzbach for her outstanding accomplishment and sincerely congratulated her on receiving the title of Ms. Wheelchair USA. She is a resident of the Cold Harbor District. |

| Betty Rice, Feb. 25, 2009 |
Betty Rice, who is retiring from the Community Services Board, was recognized by Mr. Stanley and the Board of Supervisors. She represented the Beaverdam District on the CSB for nine years, the maximum allowed by State law. Over her nine years of service, she was a very active Board member who faithfully represented the needs of persons affected by mental illness and substance abuse. She served as Vice Chairman in 2005 and as liaison with the Mental Health Association in 2006. The Board expressed its heartfelt appreciation to Betty Rice for her service to Hanover County as a member of the Community Services Board. |

| Pat Funk, Feb. 25, 2009 |
Pat Funk, who is retiring from the Community Services Board, was recognized by Mr. Via and the Board of Supervisors. Pat Funk was appointed to serve on the CSB as an at-large member in May 2005. She was the CSB’s liaison with the Hanover Mental Health Association (HMHA) from January 2006 to December 2008. Pat Funk was also one of the original members of Sunrise House and assisted the CSB in the transition to the RAFT House. A tireless advocate for those individuals affected by mental illness, she served as a critical bridge with the HMHA and set an example for all citizens of Hanover through her active participation and her dedication to the County. |

| Community Services Board, Feb. 25, 2009 |
Mr. Setliff and the Board of Supervisors congratulated Hanover Community Services for its three-year accreditation from CARF. CARF (The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) is the premier accreditation commission for mental health, substance abuse and intellectual disabilities programs. CARF conducted a vigorous three-day on-site review of the CSB’s programs last fall and issued accreditations that are valid through October 2011. It is the second consecutive three-year Accreditation for all of these programs and the third that the international accrediting commission has awarded to Hanover’s Employment Programs. Terry Gay, formerly of the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, was recognized by Mr. Gordon and the Board of Supervisors. Terry Gay served the citizens of Hanover County in the Sheriff’s Office for 29 years before his retirement earlier this year. He rose to the rank of Major in the Patrol Division. The Board recognized Terry Gay’s dedicated service to the County and its citizens represents the best attributes of Hanover County employees and offered its best wishes for a long, healthy, and happy retirement. | Deputy Sheriff Tommy Eaves, January 14, 2009 |
Hanover County Deputy Sheriff Tommy Eaves was recognized by Mr. McGhee and the Board of Supervisors for winning the Valor Award for the third time. Deputy Sheriff Eaves received a Bronze Valor Award for subduing a Hanover High School student without harm who attacked him, put him in a chokehold and grabbed for his gun as Deputy Sheriff Eaves sought to restrain him on September 12. Tommy Eaves has served the citizens of Hanover County in the Sheriff’s Office for over 20 years and his honors have included being named Officer of the Year, the Law Enforcement Top Achievement Award and a Purple Heart. The Board noted that Deputy Sheriff Eaves is an outstanding law enforcement officer, father, husband and friend to many as a lifelong member of the Hanover County community and congratulated him for his outstanding service. Valor Awards are presented by the Retail Merchants Association. |
