The clerks of circuit court date their beginning to 1619, and, with the
Sheriffs, are the oldest of Virginia's elected constitutional officers.
Despite its ancient roots, Hanover's Clerk's Office has entered the era
of digital record keeping and is using the best technology available to
improve its service to the public.
The Clerk's Office's responsibilities include recording real estate documents,
probate, court administration, issuing marriage licenses and concealed
handgun permits.
You can find copies of deeds, plats, certificates of satisfaction, wills,
judgments, marriage licenses, court orders and county land books in the
clerk's office. The records date to 1865, rather than 1720, when Hanover
County was formed. This is because almost all of the office's records
were burned in April 1865, at the end of the Civil War.
The Clerk's Office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
