Trip Chalkley
Hanover County Commonwealth's Attorney
The Commonwealth's Attorney Office is responsible for prosecuting criminal offenses that occur in Hanover County.
It is my responsibility to ensure that cases are tried as efficiently and professionally as the judicial system permits. Each member of my office is dedicated to serving the citizens of Hanover County whether they be victims or witnesses. You are encouraged to call the office if you have any questions. The general office number is (804) 365-6185 and the individual answering the phone can direct you to the attorney handling the case. My personal number is (804) 365-6186.
The citizens of Hanover County are served not only by myself, but by my Chief Deputy Shari Skipper and seven Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorneys. Please do not hesitate to call upon any member of my legal staff or my legal assistants.
Responsibilities
The Commonwealth's Attorney also coordinates the extradition of criminals who have fled the state, prosecutes asset forfeitures and those individuals who fail to obey court orders.
The Commonwealth's Attorney is the minister of justice which means I not only prosecute cases but after conviction seek an appropriate sentence. An appropriate sentence includes attempting to secure appropriate restitution for victims. On occasion, the Commonwealth’s Attorney will decline to prosecute cases because of insufficient evidence and/or the conduct alleged does not constitute a criminal violation.
The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office includes the Victim/Witness Office, which counsels crime victims regarding their legal rights and offers advice about rehabilitative services and other community resources available for victims' protection. The Victim/Witness Office also notifies victims and witnesses of court appearances and pretrial interviews. If you fall under this category please contact Jennifer Kilcoyne, Director of Victim/Witness at (804) 365-6274.
Beyond the preparation and trial of criminal cases, the Commonwealth’s Attorney's Office advises law enforcement agencies, consults with and advises the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Ashland Police Department and the Virginia State Police regarding policies and procedures, answers citizen inquiries concerning the criminal justice system, and provides assistance for on-going criminal investigations to the above law enforcement agencies.
I personally would be delighted to speak to your group or organization. Please contact my office at (804) 365-6185 so that we may arrange an agreeable date and time.
