Real EstateTax Information
The Commissioner of the Revenue is responsible for maintaining information
on all tax parcels in the county and for preparing the yearly real estate
land book. The land book is the basis from which the real estate tax bills
are generated. The Commissioner of the Revenue is also responsible for
administering the Land Use Program and the Tax Relief Program for the
Elderly and Disabled.
The real estate records are based on the instruments that are recorded
in the Clerk's Office of the Circuit Court. The Clerk of the Circuit Court
furnishes copies of all recorded instruments, such as deeds, plats, and
wills, to the Commissioner's Office. The office staff then uses this information
to update the real estate records.
The current real estate tax rate is $0.81 per $100 dollars assessed.
To determine the tax amount for real estate, multiply the total assessed
value by 0.0081 (10,000 X 0.0081 = $81.00). The County's Real Estate Assessor is responsible for the valuation of real estate property in Hanover County.
Once the property value has been determined, the information is transferred
to our office. Questions regarding assessments should be directed to
the Assessor at (804) 365-6026.
The real estate tax bills are mailed and collected by the Treasurer.
Real estate bills are due twice a year. The first half payment is due
on June 5. The second half payment is due October 5. Questions regarding
tax payments and mortgages should be directed to the Treasurer at (804)
365-6050 or by email to treasurer@co.hanover.va.us.
