The Hanover County Community Profile: Crime

The Hanover County Sheriff's Office is the principal provider of law enforcement services for Hanover County. The Law Enforcement section of the Hanover County Sheriff's Office is its largest unit, employing 177 sworn law enforcement officers and nineteen civilians. Other sections include Administrative Support, Operations, Investigative Operations and Patrol Operations.

In the calendar year 2003, 427 juvenile offenses were filed against 379 youngsters ranging in age from nine to eighteen years. The most common reported offenses committed by juveniles are petite larceny, predominantly shoplifting , (95 incidents or 22.2% of all reported incidents in 2003), and marijuana possession and distribution (82 incidents or 19.2% of all reported incidents in 2003).

Eighty percent of offenses were committed by young men, twenty percent by young women.

Juvenile Offense Table Categories Defined:

  • Offenses against people include simple assault, assault & battery, assaulting a police officer, hit and run, robbery, and sex offenses.
  • Offenses against property include breaking and entering, embezzlement, felony vandalism, forgery, shoplifting, possession/receiving stolen goods, and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
  • Offenses involving drugs include possession and distribution of marijuana, distribution of cocaine and distribution of controlled substances on school property, possession of controlled substance, possession of schedule III and VI drugs and conspiracy.
  • Mischief includes vandalism and disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, drunk in public.
