The Hanover County Community Profile: Parks and Recreation

The Parks and Recreation Department page on the County website, provides information on individual parks with a table that describes the amenities available in each, as well as the events and recreational programs offered during the year.

In addition to this helpful information, bi-monthly park use data from 1999 through March-April 2004 is represented in the following table:

Youth playground and after school programs occurred in the months of July and August from 1999 through 2001, but were expanded to include the months of May through December in 2002, and year-round in 2003. Usage increased every year from 1999 to 2002, and declined in 2003, mainly in the areas of athletics and club activities. However, there are indications that usage in these areas is increasing once again, based on January through April figures.

The Department frequently queries its users about their satisfaction with events and their suggestions for new events and changes to existing programs. For example, residents 51 years and older were surveyed in fall 2003 about their preferred activities. The results are tallied in the following table.
