Consumer Fireworks Laws in Hanover County
Hanover Fire/EMS reminds our citizens that in Virginia, it is illegal to sell, buy, possess, use, ignite, or explode firecrackers, skyrockets, bottle-rockets or similar devices that rise into the air, travel laterally or fire projectiles into the air. The only legal fireworks that can be used, sold or bought are commonly known as “Consumer Fireworks”; sparklers, fountains, Pharaoh’s serpents, caps of pistols, pinwheels commonly known as whirligigs/spinning jennies and any other devices approved by the Fire Marshal that comply with all regulations or laws.
Fireworks can only be used or ignited on private property, with the consent of the owner of such property. The use or igniting of any Consumer Fireworks is strictly prohibited on any public street, road, avenue, cul-de-sacs, public right of way or any public property and this action violates Hanover County Code Section 9-16.
Home Fire Prevention
Fire safety and survival begin with everyone in your household being prepared.
Have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, test them monthly and keep them clean and equipped with fresh batteries at all times. Smoke alarms can prevent home fire fatalities by providing an early warning signal so you and your family can escape. Know when and how to call for help. And remember to practice your home escape plan! Learn more about Smoke Alarms...

Safety For Smokers
Smoking is the number one cause of preventable home fire deaths. If you smoke, remember to put it all the way out, every time.
Check out this fire safety brochure with information to keep smokers, and those who live with smokers, safe from home fires caused by smoking materials:
Juvenile Firesetting
Juvenile firesetting is not a fire problem, it is a kid problem.
Children playing with fire cause hundreds of deaths and thousands
of injuries each year. Prevent curiosity firesetting by providing
fire and safety education for children.
