Gaines Mill Preservation
Gaines Mill is in the news.
Last year, the Richmond Battlefields Association purchased about 5 acres which lay on the Confederate side of the battlefield.
The Civil War Trust is seeking to purchase an additional 285 acres, which would more than quadruple the amount of land currently protected. The Trust has announced that it will commit $1 million from its Sesquicentennial preservation campaign to purchase the land.
The Trust calls Gaines Mill “one of the most important unprotected battlefields in America’. Back in the late 1920s, a group of dedicated Richmond residents got together and bought 60 acres south of Boatswain’s Creek, the core of the current battlefield park. However, the battle of Gaines Mill encompassed more than 3,000 acres.
