Leash Laws Apply Countywide Through June 30
Each year, beginning April 1 and lasting through the end of June, Hanover County’s running at-large laws apply to dogs in rural areas as well as dogs in the Suburban Services Area.
Any dog running off the property of its owner or custodian and not leashed or tethered between April 1 and June 30 will be considered to be running at-large. These rules also apply to Hanover Parks & Recreation property and school grounds.
Running at-large laws are enforced in rural areas and county-wide between April 1 and June 30 of each year because of increased wildlife activity and a greater danger of rabies.
Dogs running loose should be reported by calling Hanover County Emergency Communications at 804-365-6140. Any dangerous animal can be reported by dialing 911 for immediate assistance, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
