Pamunkey Regional Jail Authority
The jail is administered and operated by an independent governmental body called the Pamunkey Regional Jail Authority, which is authorized according to the Virginia Code. The jail is a separate agency from the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, though the two departments work in close harmony with each other. For more information on the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, please click here.
The Jail Authority directs the growth, operation, and business activities of jail, and has served the local incarceration needs of its member localities since 1998.
The Authority is made up of five members who are appointed by the three member jurisdictions, Hanover County, Caroline County and the Town of Ashland, and holds regular meetings on a quarterly basis.
Officers employed by the Authority are duly sworn as Conservators of the Peace, and vested with such rights and authority pursuant to Virginia Code.
For more information regarding the Jail Authority or jail staff, please submit a written request to the attention of the Superintendent in care of the jail (see address below).
