Lateral Entry Program For Deputy Sheriff

The Hanover County Sheriff's Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Patrol Deputy for our Lateral Entry Program.

The LATERAL ENTRY PROGRAM program affords Virginia DCJS Certified Officers a chance to join one of the area's finest Law Enforcement Agencies. Officers who have excelled in their law enforcement careers and are up to the task of meeting the high standards of the Hanover County Sheriff's Office are offered two paths into a true lateral entry program. Applications will be accepted on a continual basis.

Phase one: offers a financial incentive based on the years of service of community law enforcement that a certified officer has served (up to five years).

Phase two: provides the opportunity for a certified officer with three or more years of service to join this Agency at a step in our Career Development Program, provided the officer meets criteria for the Lateral Entry Program. This option also creates an opportunity for an officer who has already established tenure and status to change employing agencies where in the past the officer was unable to do so due to financial reasons.

For a CONFIDENTIAL review of your individual qualifications to determine your eligibility and to determine which option would best serve your personal and family needs, please contact the Personnel Officer at, 804-365-6230 or Post Office Box 40, Hanover, Virginia 23069.

Minimum Requirements: Applicants must be certified as a police officer through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, currently employed by an Law Enforcement Agency in the Commonwealth of Virginia, 21 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen. Applicants must also possess a high school diploma or equivalent, possess a valid driver's license and successfully pass all phases of a highly competitive selection process. The selection process includes: a written exam, physical agility test, oral review board, polygraph examination, comprehensive background investigation, interview with the Sheriff, psychological evaluation and a medical exam.

Benefits: While the starting base salary for Patrol Officer is $40,492.00 an officer's salary who joins the agency through the Lateral Entry Program will be greater based on his/her individual qualifications. The Sheriff's Office offers a complete county benefits package in addition to a take home vehicle, college tuition reimbursement and deferred compensation.
